How to Determine If You Have Bed Bug Bites

The itch and the redness are not just the only thing to watch for and for you to be able to say that you really have been attacked by this arthropod, you have to have a clear grasp of what bed bug bites are. People often fail to acknowledge the presence of the parasite unless the symptoms become too obvious and pronounced.

But before identifying bed bug bites, getting some information on what causes them might be appropriate. The culprit for this parasitic itch is brought about by bed bugs. This organism does not have any means of flying, as they are wingless.

However, they move around by crawling fast. They are one of the commonest pests around. They feed exclusively on the blood of warm-blooded animals and so they are great parasites of humans, birds and bats.

The bugs are very small and this feature makes them well suited to the crevices and deep portions of the bedding where they are commonly found. Their minute size and with their deep brown or burnt orange coloration adds up to the perfect camouflage of this species.

Homes, which were formerly devoid of this species, gain their entry through luggage, furniture, clothing, and boxes that have been carried from somewhere. Even a few individuals can actually establish a large population that can readily attack innocent hosts once they are hungry.

So how can you really tell that this form of parasite has attacked you? Unfortunately, the signs are not at all exclusively associated with the bug. Other parasitic infestations or even mosquito bites do appear very similar to the attack of this parasite. In order to have a strong confirmation that you really are harboring these parasites in your bed you have to take a careful look on the following:

Bite patterns – initial signs would reveal small reddish bumps on your skin very close to that of a mosquito bite. What is noticeable and exclusively done by this parasite is the pattern of three or four reddish bumps that appear adjacent to one another. Often the bites are arranged as if they have been done one at a time, once for every meal.
When the symptoms were observed – The effects of the bite varies greatly among individuals. Where others may manifest extreme symptoms such as welting, itchiness and swelling to others who do not manifest even the slightest symptom, it is important to consider the lag between the times the patient was first bitten up to the time that the symptoms are expected to surface. Among individuals who had few bites, the difference may last up to one week. The lag becomes shorter or narrower once the victim is exposed frequently to the parasite, as bed bug bites are more common.

Pest Control Lancaster PA

If you live in Lancaster PA, you will most likely have a bug issue from time to time. We have a unique set of bugs, ranging from Stink Bugs to Odorous House Ants, to Subterranean Termites. Well we are going to list a few of them and briefly talk about how to control these pests.

Stink Bugs have now come from Allentown, and are here to stay, and you will probably need to spray at some time or another for them. Another bug, the Asian Ladybug, has been released by the state to aid Hemlock trees. And of course, Boxelder Beetles are a favorite in our area. All of the above are sun-bathers and prefer the south-side of homes and can be controlled by perimeter power-spraying. Stop the bugs before they get in, and problem solved. Now to keep these bugs down, one should consider treating quarterly for these pests due to seasonal changes.

Another insect needing controlled in our county is the Odorous House Ant. These ants are really tough for the average homeowner to stop. I would say that we really started to see them become the predominate ant invader in Lancaster back in the mid-90’s. “Fracturing”, is the reason most cannot eliminate them. If a certain number of ants do not return home, a queen will “split” the colony, and now you have two colonies coming at you! You may need professional help to eliminate these guys. If you are going to go after them, use only non-repellent products that allow the worker ants to carry the product and “infect” the colony.

Now when it comes to Subterranean Termite control in Lancaster or anywhere, do not try to tackle them yourself. Please see our other articles on control for termites if you have them! In the long run, you could have thousands of dollars in repairs if you incorrectly treat a termite infestation! We have written specifically to address this issue, so please take some time to review our other articles.

With this in mind, if you live in this part of Pennsylvania, and you are “Bugged-out”, don’t take it personally, it just comes with the turf!

Information About Clover Mites

An occasional nuisance, clover mites cause more consternation than is really necessary. During early spring and sometimes in the fall, tiny dark spots moving along window sills, thresholds or door jambs are the indication that these creatures have moved indoors.

Although unwelcome, the presence of clover mites creates no danger for humans or pets inside. Their food supply comes from clover and grasses, not blood as is customary with many varieties of mites. When crushed, their bodies do exude a reddish brown substance, which leads many to believe they are parasitic of animals or people; however, this red color is just their pigmentation and has nothing to do with their diets. Also in contrast to many mites, clover mites are not arthropods; instead, they are close relatives of spiders in the family of arachnids.

Normally, a well fed lawn is the favorite habitat of clover mites, where they feast upon a number of grasses and plants. There are at least 200 different varieties of plant life on which these creatures have been discovered, sucking the sap from the hapless plant. Mold and algae are also forms of food for these mites. They rarely venture far from their source of food once it has become an established buffet for them.

It is when the grasses die away or before they begin to green that the clover mites begin a migration that may include inside of your home. They do not cause any damage to buildings or structures, and will not bite animals or humans. Their life cycle lasts around 30 days, beginning from the hatching of eggs which have been laid in tree bark, cracks within wooden fencing or foundation walls. The emerging mite immediately begins searching for a host plant, where it will remain through its two nymphal stages. Two generations are usually produced in one season; one in the spring and the second in the fall.

If a generation of clover mites has made their way into your home, they can be easily eliminated with a swipe of a damp cloth. This will crush the mites and clean away the reddish residue from their bodies. On the floor, a thorough vacuuming will eliminate any of the pests. They are unable to survive inside and away from their food source.

Keeping grass well manicured and trimmed or removed within 24 inches of the foundation of your home proves to be effective in preventing any clover mites from migrating into your home. A layer of gravel or coarse sand placed in that area provides even more of a deterrent. For a serious infestation, a commercial preparation can be applied around the home’s foundation.

Clover mites may be unsightly and a nuisance with which to deal, but they do not pose any danger to either humans or pets. Prevention is always the best method of dealing with these creatures.
